Prioritize paper manufactured in the Nordic countries.
As for electricity procurement, our goal is that by 2013 all
Edita’s production and office sites will use electricity gener-
ated from renewable sources. Edita’s main production plants
already use solely renewable energy. Electricity used by Edita
Västra Aros is generated by hydroelectric and wind power, and
that used by Edita Prima by hydroelectric power and wood-
based biofuels. Chemicals used in printing are approved for
the Nordic Ecolabel. Whenever a new chemical is introduced
into the process, its eligibility for the Nordic Ecolabel will
always be checked with the organization that grants the right
to use the label.
Environmentally responsible operations
Our operations place a strain on the environment in several
ways. We minimize that environmental impact by adopting a
systematic approach and aiming for continuous improvement.
Environmentally responsible offices
Edita’s environmental work previously focused strongly on
the reduction of environmental impact created by production
plants. In 2010, the Group started investing determined effort
in the reduction of environmental impact in the offices of the
group companies, too. Most of the environmental impact in
these offices is comprised of energy consumption, paper usage,
and carbon-dioxide emissions caused by travel.
The wwf ’s Green Office system was chosen to be the guide-
line for environmental work at offices. In 2011, the Green
Office certification was granted to Edita’s headquarters (Edita
Plc and Edita Prima Oy). The same certification was granted
to Edita Publishing in 2010. In 2012, the Green Office system
will be expanded to Edita’s offices in Sweden.
Environmentally responsible production
Edita’s main production plants in Helsinki and Västerås are
certified in accordance with the iso 14001 standard for envi-
ronmental management. Credible environmental work relies
heavily on environmental management systems, which ensure
that work is systematic and pursues continuous improvement
and that the current environmental legislation is being com-
plied with.
In production activities, the main causes of environmental
impact are materials, energy, waste, and emissions. We began
regular measurement of waste volumes in the 1990s, when
