TAEKWONDO

Finland has taken part at all Olympic taekwondo tournaments except in 2008. Kirsimarja Koskinen placed sixth in women’s 67

kg category in Sydney 2000 and Suvi Mikkonen fifth in 57 kg in London 2012.

Suvi Mikkonen broke into the world taekwondo elite by placing fifth at her Olympic debut in London 2012. In 2014

she won her first major international medal, bronze at the European Championships in Baku. She won her ticket to

Rio by finishing runner-up in her weight class at the European qualifying tournament in Istanbul in January. Suvi

has lived and trained in Spain for more than a decade. She was a talented football player in her junior years, and

played for one season in Spanish women’s second division before concentrating fully on taekwondo.
