Tanja Kylliäinen was born and bred in America, but she also holds Finnish citizenship due to her father, who
emigrated from Finland to the USA. She first swam for Finland at senior level in 2011, finishing eighth in 400
metres medley at the European Short Course Championships in Szczecin, Poland. She also represented Finland
at the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju, Korea. Tanja graduated from the University of Louisville in 2015. After her
Olympic debut in Rio, she plans to spend more time in Finland to improve her skills in the Finnish language.
